President Biden Awards Medal of Honor to Civil War Soldiers Executed for Daring Mission against Confederacy

Good evening, this is Jessica Malone reporting for Channel 7 News. Today, President Joe Biden posthumously awarded Private Philip G. Shadrach and Private George D. Wilson with the Medal of Honor, over 160 years after their execution for their brave mission during the American Civil War. The two Union soldiers were recognized for their gallantry and intrepidity during a covert military operation behind Confederate lines on April 12, 1862. The operation involved hijacking a train in Georgia and driving it north for 87 miles, destroying enemy infrastructure along the way.

President Biden awarded the medals in a ceremony at the White House, with descendants of Shadrach and Wilson present. The President emphasized the importance of knowing American history and recognizing the sacrifices made for democracy. The soldiers were part of the 2nd Ohio Volunteer Infantry Regiment and joined a group of Union soldiers and civilians to carry out the raid on the General locomotive headed towards Chattanooga. Confederate forces chased the Union soldiers, eventually capturing them within two weeks.

According to Dr. Shane Makowicki, a US Army historian, Shadrach and Wilson were convicted as spies and executed by hanging. Despite facing their execution, the soldiers remained steadfast in their belief in the United States of America. This operation is now known as the Great Locomotive Chase. Brad Quinlin, a historian involved in the recognition of Shadrach and Wilson, explained that bad timing was the primary reason for the delay in awarding them the Medal of Honor. Their bravery and dedication to the Republic were finally recognized after years of effort by their descendants and historians.
