In a shocking revelation, Ed Martin, one of the leaders of the Republican National Convention’s platform committee, has a history of advocating for extreme anti-abortion positions. Martin, the deputy policy director for the convention’s platform committee, has been pushing for a national ban on abortion without exceptions for rape or incest. He even entertained the idea of jailing women who get abortions and the doctors who perform them.
The Republican National Committee selected Martin in May to help craft the party’s platform, which outlines policy positions and how Republicans, including former President Donald Trump, would govern if elected. The platform is expected to focus on Trump’s agenda for a second term.
Martin, an attorney and former chair of the Missouri Republican Party, has consistently taken a hardline stance on abortion. He has criticized Republicans with a more moderate position on the issue and has questioned the safety of birth control. In a radio show in June 2022, shortly after the Roe v. Wade ruling, Martin said, “The true bane of the pro-life movement is the faction of fake pro-lifers who claim to believe in the sanctity of human life but are only willing to vote that way with a list of exceptions.”
Martin, who is also the president of Phyllis Schlafly’s Eagles, a socially conservative advocacy group, has co-authored the book, “The Conservative Case for Trump,” with Schlafly. CNN’s KFile reviewed episodes of Martin’s radio show, where he reiterates his anti-abortion views.
In a recent appearance on Roger Stone’s podcast, Martin reaffirmed his stance on abortion and rejected reports that Trump’s campaign was attempting to soften the platform’s position on abortion. He emphasized that the platform would continue to “respect life in every moment.”
Additionally, Martin has discussed on his radio show possible prison sentences for women and abortion doctors. He compared abortion to a family starving a child to death and argued that the state had an interest in some form of punishment for those involved in abortion procedures.
Despite growing support for abortion rights among voters, Martin has continued to push for some of the most stringent restrictions on abortion, including discounting the need for exceptions in cases such as the rape of a 10-year-old Ohio girl. He stands firm in his belief that abortion is wrong in all situations, citing morality and science as reasons for his opposition.
