Rising black bear encounters pose danger across 18 states: Experts urge caution and preparedness

Social media videos featuring black bears rummaging through trashcans, raiding bird feeders, or roaming around backyards in search of food have become increasingly common and entertaining for viewers. However, encountering a black bear in person can be far from amusing and poses real dangers. These encounters are on the rise in various states across the United States, including Alabama, Arizona, California, Connecticut, Idaho, Iowa, Mississippi, Missouri, and more. The International Association for Bear Research and Management has reported an increase in interactions between bears and humans, with over 46,000 incidents reported to state agencies in 2022.

Tommy Campbell, a wildlife biologist based in Estes Park, Colorado, highlighted that human encroachment on bear habitats has led to a rise in bear encounters. Black bears are widespread throughout North America, and they are becoming accustomed to encountering humans more frequently. While most bears will typically flee from humans, those living near populated areas can become habituated and show indifference towards human presence.

Lt. Aaron C. Morrow, a state game warden and information and education supervisor with the Pennsylvania Game Commission’s Northeast Region, explained that bears can be attracted to human-populated areas if food sources, such as bird feeders, garbage cans, and backyard grills, are present. Bears that become used to foraging for human-provided food can cause property damage and present a higher risk of human-bear encounters. Lt. Morrow advised people to eliminate attractants on their properties to prevent bear sightings, such as securing food sources and removing potential food options.

If you do happen to encounter a black bear, it is essential to keep your distance, remain calm, and avoid running, as it may trigger a chase response from the bear. Back away slowly in the opposite direction and give the bear space to leave. Making loud noises or banging pots and pans can deter the bear from approaching further. Once the bear has left, it is crucial to secure all food sources and remove any attractants to prevent future encounters.

Encounters with black bears may not only occur in residential areas but also while hiking or hunting in bear territory. Mary Beth Skylis, an avid backpacker and wildlife enthusiast, shared her experience of encountering three black bears in Virginia while hiking along the Appalachian Trail in Shenandoah National Park. Respecting the animals and maintaining a safe distance is crucial when encountering wildlife in their natural habitat.

It is essential to dispel myths about black bears, particularly the misconception that playing dead is the best strategy when attacked by a predatory bear. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission advises that if a black bear attacks aggressively, it is crucial to fight back focusing on the bear’s face, eyes, and nose. Additionally, finding a secure place such as a car or building to escape to is recommended. If escape is not possible, using any available object to fight back against the bear is necessary, concentrating on the bear’s face and muzzle.

In conclusion, the increase in human-bear encounters emphasizes the importance of taking precautions to prevent attracting bears to residential areas and knowing how to react in the event of an encounter. Respecting wildlife, eliminating attractants, and being prepared for potential encounters are essential steps to ensure human safety and bear conservation. By understanding bear behavior and following guidelines for safe interaction, individuals can coexist with black bears harmoniously without posing a danger to either party.
