Selena Gomez Opens Up About Fertility Challenges: “I Can’t Carry My Own Children”

Selena Gomez has opened up about her journey towards parenthood, sharing personal insights into the challenges she faces due to her health conditions. In an exclusive interview with Vanity Fair, published on Monday, the “Only Murders in the Building” actress and singer discussed how her fertility has been influenced by her diagnoses.

Reflecting on her situation, Gomez stated, “I unfortunately can’t carry my own children. I have a lot of medical issues that would put my life and the baby’s in jeopardy. That was something I had to grieve for a while.”

Despite these challenges, Gomez expressed hope, noting that surrogacy and adoption are “huge possibilities” for her. She emphasized her gratitude for “wonderful people willing” to support her in these processes.

“It’s not necessarily the way I envisioned it. I thought it would happen the way it happens for everyone. (But) I’m in a much better place with that,” she said. “It made me really thankful for the other outlets for people who are dying to be moms. I’m one of those people. I’m excited for what that journey will look like, but it’ll look a little different.”

In a heartfelt conclusion, Gomez reassured that the method of becoming a parent does not matter, declaring, “it’ll be mine. It’ll be my baby.”

Gomez has openly discussed her health issues over the years, revealing in 2015 that she was diagnosed with lupus, a chronic autoimmune disease that can lead to inflammation and pain as the body attacks healthy tissues.

Her health challenges escalated in 2017 when she underwent a kidney transplant, with the organ donated by her friend and fellow actress, Francia Raisa. In 2020, she also disclosed her diagnosis of bipolar disorder.

Gomez’s struggles and resilience were further chronicled in her 2022 documentary “My Mind & Me.”
