In breaking news, the Supreme Court has denied former Trump adviser Steve Bannon’s request to avoid prison while he appeals his contempt of Congress conviction. The court swiftly dismissed the case without any dissents.
Bannon, a conservative podcast host and ex-strategist for Donald Trump, had petitioned the Supreme Court last week to postpone his prison sentence. A federal judge had previously ordered Bannon to surrender by July 1 to serve a four-month sentence.
This decision comes on the heels of a similar outcome for another former Trump adviser, Peter Navarro, who also failed to receive leniency from the conservative high court. Bannon had cited the House’s partisan approval to address the merits of his appeal as it progresses in DC’s federal appeals court.
Bannon was found guilty by a federal jury for defying a subpoena in the US House’s inquiry into the events of January 6, 2021. Despite this conviction, he remains a steadfast supporter of Trump and his potential presidential reelection bid.
In his defense, Bannon claimed he was following legal advice to withhold his response to the subpoena until the House clarified Trump’s executive privilege assertions. However, the Justice Department countered by stating that Bannon showed “total noncompliance” to the subpoena.
Instead of serving his sentence in a minimum-security prison camp as he had hoped, Bannon is now required to report to the low-security federal prison in Danbury, Connecticut.
