CNN has learned that The Chicks will perform the National Anthem at the Democratic National Convention on Thursday night. The country music group, formerly known as the Dixie Chicks, will kick off the evening when Vice President Kamala Harris makes her speech.
This performance by The Chicks is significant for the convention, given the band’s past entanglement with politics. In 2003, lead singer Natalie Maines made controversial remarks about then-President George W. Bush, sparking boycotts and backlash from fans.
Despite this history, The Chicks are not new to convention appearances, having also performed at the virtual 2020 DNC. The band, consisting of Maines, Martie Maguire, and Emily Strayer, has a successful career, winning numerous awards in the music industry.
The DNC has been actively recruiting country stars this week, including Mickey Guyton and Maren Morris, who have been vocal about progressive issues. In contrast, conservative country star Jason Aldean attended the recent Republican National Convention as a supporter of former President Donald Trump.
At the RNC, country-rock star Kid Rock performed and expressed his support for Trump, leading chants of “fight, fight” and “Trump, Trump.” The former president praised Kid Rock as a friend and an amazing performer loved by everyone.
