Patriotism can take on many forms, including naming a child after a beloved American figure. According to Rebekah Wahlberg of BabyCenter, a patriotic baby name can evoke strong values and a sense of national pride. While many may default to the names of the Founding Fathers, there are numerous individuals in American history who have contributed to the betterment of the nation and have names that are worth considering for a baby.

Abigail is a classic name that pays homage to Abigail Adams, a prominent figure in American history who advocated for women’s rights and the abolition of slavery. The name, which means “father of exaltation” in Hebrew, is currently ranked at No. 35 on the list of popular girls’ baby names. Another option is Amber, inspired by the line “For amber waves of grain” from the patriotic anthem “America the Beautiful.” While Amber has dropped in popularity, it still holds significance and sits at No. 558 on the list of most popular girls’ names.

Elizabeth is a versatile name that has been used by notable figures throughout American history, such as Eliza Schuyler Hamilton and Betsy Ross. With meanings like “my God is bountiful” or “consecrated by God,” it is no surprise that Elizabeth is a popular choice, currently ranked at No. 38 for girls’ names. Harriet is another powerful name associated with influential American women, including Harriet Tubman, Harriet Beecher Stowe, and Harriet Jacobs. The name, which means “Home Ruler,” has risen significantly in popularity, now sitting at No. 2,493 for baby girls.

Rosa, inspired by Rosa Parks, is a name that embodies courage and resilience. Known for her role in the civil rights movement, Parks made history by refusing to give up her seat on a bus in Alabama. Booker, associated with Booker T. Washington, a 19th-century statesman, has seen a decline in popularity but remains a significant name in American history. Franklin, linked to Benjamin Franklin and Franklin D. Roosevelt, symbolizes freedom and leadership, while George, often associated with George Washington, carries a sense of patriotism and weight.

Lastly, Lincoln, in honor of Abraham Lincoln, one of the most revered presidents in American history, symbolizes strength and perseverance. Despite his assassination in 1865, Lincoln’s name has only grown in popularity over the years. These names offer a meaningful way to celebrate American history and instill a sense of pride and valor in a child. Patriotic baby names serve as a reminder of the individuals who have shaped the nation and the values they stood for.
