Universal UK to Challenge Disneyland Paris: Job Boom or Community Strain?

The recent announcement regarding Universal Studios’ plans to establish a theme park in the UK has turned heads across the nation, igniting excitement among families eager for new entertainment options. This significant development comes after extensive deliberations, culminating in Secretary of State for Housing, Communities, and Local Government, Steve Reed, granting approval for the construction of the park in Kempston Hardwick, near Bedford. Universal’s ambition extends beyond merely creating a local attraction; it envisions establishing one of the largest theme parks globally, setting its sights firmly on challenging established competitors like Disneyland Paris.

In the planning documentation, Universal emphasizes that the UK, being a prime destination for international visitors, warrants two major global theme parks. The project is placed at the forefront as a “generational opportunity,” highlighting its potential to reshape the leisure landscape in the country. However, there are doubts looming over its feasibility. After consulting with local residents, it appears that not everyone is convinced that this ambitious plan is achievable, particularly given the existing infrastructure constraints in the Bedford area.

Local sentiments portray a mixed reaction to Universal’s grand vision. Claudia Pixley, a resident whose home sits in the vicinity of the planned theme park entrance, voiced her concerns. She believes the company should have acquired far more land—ideally 2,000 acres—to ensure robust infrastructure to accommodate expected visitor traffic. Pixley fears that the smaller roads surrounding the area will be overwhelmed, particularly if traffic jams occur on major highways. She regards the notion of Universal Studios setting up camp nearby as “absolute madness,” emphasizing her desire to hold onto her home, which she describes as her “slice of Eden.”

While some local residents share Pixley’s apprehensions, universal conducted a survey indicating that a staggering 92% of respondents from Bedford support the development. This overwhelming support suggests a promising local consensus regarding the park’s potential benefits. Set to open by 2031, the park is projected to attract a whopping 8.5 million visitors annually and potentially boast Europe’s tallest rides. The park’s extensive 268-hectare (662-acre) footprint would dwarf existing attractions like Disneyland Paris, which occupies roughly 52 hectares (130 acres).

Furthermore, Universal’s projections suggest their park could reclaim the title of the most-visited theme park in Europe, surpassing Disneyland Paris, which managed 10.2 million visitors as of last year. To put this in perspective, existing UK parks like Legoland Windsor Resort and Alton Towers see only a fraction of that attendance, emphasizing Universal’s bold ambitions.

Theme park enthusiasts and experts echo a sense of excitement regarding Universal’s entrance into the UK market, predicting that it might spur competitive improvements in local theme parks. Content creator “Theme Park Kate,” renowned for her insights into theme parks on TikTok, sees Universal’s vast size and unique rides as potentially transformative for European leisure attractions. There is also speculation about the inclusion of exclusive rides based on popular intellectual properties, such as James Bond and The Lord of the Rings, which could enhance the allure of the park.

However, the economic implications of the park extend beyond tourism. Universal anticipates creating approximately 8,050 jobs upon opening, positively impacting local employment. While some properties near the site may see an uptick in value, others may become less affordable for long-term residents. Real estate expert Nick Kier warns that property prices in the area are likely to rise, suggesting a clear delineation between winners and losers in this scenario.

Traffic concerns have been addressed, with local councillor Marc Frost asserting that thorough traffic surveys assure them that infrastructure is being prepared. A forthcoming four-platform railway station in Wixams, adjoining the park, will further contribute to the accessibility of this new entertainment hub.

In conclusion, Universal’s impending theme park in the UK aims to be a game-changer, potentially altering the landscape of theme parks in Europe. While there are concerns from locals like Claudia Pixley, the optimistic response from the majority indicates a strong anticipation for what this monumental project could bring, both in terms of tourism and economic revitalization. The park’s opening could signal a fresh era for the UK’s entertainment sector, ushering in a wave of visitors eager to experience what Universal has to offer.
