Michael White made history as the fourth Welshman to advance to the last 32 of the Championship League in Leicester by finishing at the top of Group 23 with seven points in the season’s first ranking event. Following in the footsteps of fellow Welsh players Ryan Day, Mark Williams, and Matthew Stevens, White demonstrated his skill by securing a crucial 2-2 draw with former UK champion Stephen Maguire. White showcased his talent with impressive breaks of 122 and 94 in a commanding 3-0 victory against Ryan Davies, followed by another 3-0 win over Dean Young, highlighted by knocks of 83, 74, and 98. Needing just a point to progress against Maguire, White constructed a solid 59 break in the second frame to go 2-0 ahead, ultimately securing his place in the next round.

Meanwhile, local favorite Joe O’Connor also progressed by winning Group 22 with a victory over Oliver Lines (3-1) and two draws with Harvey Chandler (2-2) and Aaron Hill (2-2) respectively. O’Connor’s impressive 130 break in his draw with Chandler proved to be vital in edging out Irishman Hill, as both players finished with identical records of five points from three matches. The tournament’s fifth day continued on Friday with fast-paced players Robert Milkins and Thepchaiya Un-Nooh taking to the table, adding to the excitement of the competition.

The Championship League format sees the eight group winners advancing to two further groups, with the ultimate goal of reaching the final. The winner not only claims a significant prize of £33,000 but also earns a coveted spot in the prestigious Champion of Champions event later in the year, with an additional £12,500 up for grabs for qualifying participants. The latest group winners include Neil Robertson from Australia, Ryan Day, Mark Williams, and Matthew Stevens from Wales, Chris Wakelin from England, Ashley Carty from England, Michael White from Wales, and Joe O’Connor from England.
